Fall

Both second grade classes made thumbprint apple trees for our bulletin board!

Now that fall is here the leaves are falling and the animals are getting ready to store food for the long cold winter.

Our Community and Beyond!

Where Do I Live?

We are talking about where we live in social studies.  We live in the country of the United States of America.  Our state is West Virginia.  We live in different communities all around the city of Parkersburg.  Some of us have Parkersburg addresses and some Vienna.  Some of us live in the town of North Hills.  We drew some pictures of our neighborhoods.

The Butterfly Cycle

The catepillars are little babies.

The catepillars are growing.  We learned that another name for catepillar is larva.

When they crawl to the top, we know that they are getting ready to make their chrysalis.

They attach to the top and form a "J" shape.

The catepillars have gone into the pupa stage and have the hard covering over them called a chrysalis.

Mrs. Games put them in the big butterfly container and they have become adults!  Look at our butterflies!

We noticed that there were markings on the wings and Avi told us that the markings camouflage them in the wild.  We also saw that some of the markings look like eyes and Ethan told us that the "eyes" scare other animals away that might eat them.

Rainbow Fish

This post is dedicated to Erika.  She is a devoted follower of our blog and reminded me to put up this post!

We read the book Rainbow Fish to help remind us to share and that it make us feel good to make our friends happy.

We made our own rainbow fish and hung them in the hall against our freshly painted blue walls.  They look beautiful!

Math Games

We are playing the Money Exchange Game.  We roll a die and collect that many $1 bills.  When we get $10, we exchange the ones for a $10 bill.  We keep doing this until we get 10 - $10 bills so we can exchange them for a $100 bill.  The first person to get to $100 is the winner!

While we are playing, we are also remembering our small group rules.
  1. Get the items we need and take care of them.
  2. Get started right away.
  3. Stay in one place.
  4. Use quiet voices.
  5. Don't bother our neighbors.
  6. Cooperate and have fun!
  7.
Jaden and Kaden are looking for $10!

Fun is the name of the game for Hank and Alina.

Ella counts her money while Josh looks on.

Katie and Zane concentrate on their money.

Donovan wants to win his game against Alana.

Erika helps Dylan sort his money.

Avi and Anh want us to see Avi's $10 bill.

Showing us their fun are Chance and Savanna.

Addy and Ethan give a smile while enjoying their game.

Evan and Kamryn are deep in thought.

Josh gives Julia a high five for her win!

Trenton waits for Mrs. Games to get back to the game.  (Mrs. Games doesn't want to play with him again because he is a good player and she lost! LOL)

Finding "Good Fit" Books

Shoes have purposes.  Flip flops are for the beach.  Dressy shoes are for weddings and special occasions.  The rain boots are for rainy days.  The tennis shoes are for gym, running, playing, etc.

Here we are discussing the shoes.

Savanna is going to try on different shoes.

Mrs. Games and Savanna are trying on different shoes. We need to wear shoes that fit us.

We did this to show us that we also need to choose books that fit us.  Just because a friend likes a book doesn't mean that it is a book that is a just right book.

The Five Finger Rule

We also learned that if we find 5 words on the first page we don't know, then we shouldn't read the book.  Kamryn is demonstrating.
